You read about them every day, celebrity couples that seem to be planning their big day one week and divorcing shortly after. It is almost hard to keep track of the marital happenings of tinsel town with the exception of the more notable expensive celebrity divorces. Over the recent years, the following divorces have managed to stand out, mostly due to the fact that the settlements have reached well into the millions.
1. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.
One recent divorce that has made headline news and will continue to do so until a final settlement is granted by a judge is the divorce of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. The two are divorcing after just four years of marriage and one child. While a decision has not been reached, it is said that Mills will receive somewhere in the range of 188 and 376 million dollars.
2. Neil Diamond and Marcia Murphy.
Coming in at about 150 million dollars is the divorce of crooner Neil Diamond and wife Marcia Murphy after 25 years of marriage. The divorce became final in 1995 at which time Murphy received the large settlement, which was a combination of assets and cash.
3. Michael Jordan and Juanita Jordan.
Possibly the most well known entertainment divorce, and also the most expensive entertainment celebrity divorce to date is that of Michael and Juanita Jordan. The two divorced after seventeen years of marriage at which time Juanita was awarded a monthly payment that was to cover the lavish lifestyle in which the couple became accustomed. This included a hefty budget for massages, shopping and personal grooming.
4. Steven Spielburg and Amy Irving.
Steven Spielburg's divorce from Amy Irving also ranked high on the list of most expensive celebrity divorces. Irving received a settlement of about 100 million after just four years of marriage. Irving won this agreement after she contested the couple's prenuptial agreement, which is rumored to have been written on a cocktail napkin.
5. Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison.
Harrison Ford's divorce with screenwriter Melissa Mathison also made headlines when their divorce was filed after 17 years of marriage. Mathison received a settlement of 85 million dollars plus future earning entitlement for films that were made during the marriage.
6. Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva.
College sweethearts Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva were unable to keep the romance together after 16 years of marriage. The two were divorced in 1994 at which time Cindy Silva was awarded a settlement of approximately 80 million dollars.
7. Linda Hamilton and James Cameron.
After just 18 months and with 1 daughter actress Linda Hamilton and director James Cameron made the news with their expensive divorce as well. Hamilton won a settlement said to be in the 50 million dollar area.
Other notable celebrity.
Other notable celebrity divorces include: Diandra Luker and Michael Douglas at 45 million, Lionel and Diane Richie at 20 million and finally Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall who ended their 20 year relationship with a settlement somewhere in the range of 15 to 50 million dollars. This was considerably less then the settlement Hall was going for however Jagger was able to convince a judge that the Hindu ceremony the couple had recognized as their wedding ceremony was not actually binding.
